Authorities said that the women scammed a number of people who were looking for a place to live.

Lisa Liebetruth and Maria Rennick allegedly used Craigslist to find their victims, according to Suffolk County Police Lt. John Rowan.

“I think that it’s important that people probably vet a potential landlord and place that they’re going to live,” Lt. Rowan said.

The pair allegedly took deposits from eight people totaling $7,000. Police said they pocketed the cash and never rented out the Port Jefferson Station room.
